COUNTY ROAD 38 CORRIDOR INFORMATION
Can truck traffic safely navigate the Kercher Bridge?

Some residents have expressed concern for truck traffic on the Kercher Bridge, and the ability for trucks to safely
navigate the curves at either end of the bridge. Elkhart County Engineers have studied the limits of the bridge, and
thus have determined:
Elkhart County Highway
1. The Kercher Bridge can safely carry the loading of more than one semi-truck traveling together or in
separate directions on the bridge structure.

2. There is safe and adequate room within the current bridge configuration for two opposing semi- trucks
to travel the roadway.
In making these determinations, Elkhart County Highway Engineers carefully studied traffic data and applied
nationally recognized highway design standards to determine the adequacy and sufficiency of the bridge and
approaches.

As an example, engineering software was utilized (Auto Turn) to study and illustrate the path of two opposing
semi-trucks on the Kercher Bridge. Click the aerial maps to enlarge.
Several improvement projects are planned along the corridor. The following projects are currently under design:
